How does the Memory Medallion® work?

Each medallion has a barcode which contains a website address. When this barcode is read by any smartphone's free barcode reader, the phone will connect to the website and enjoy story text, images and video about that person or place. The Memory Medallion® is laser-etched, stainless steel. It is impervious to weather and made to last. It is a one-time purchase per medallion with no additional fees.

What are the differences between the various Memory Medallion® products?

The functionality of our products is universal; each contains a barcode which connects to the same amount of online content. The differences between our products are their size, style and price. Original medallions have the barcode immediately visible for scanning, whereas case medallions have the barcode inside a sliding case. Our most expensive product, the Medallion featuring a personalized case cover, displays a photograph on the cover which you provide us on purchase. Lastly, Dog-tags and Wearable Remembrance items are meant to be used as jewelry rather than a permanent installation.

Highly detailed information about our various products can be found on our Products page.

For Medallions with personalized covers, what is the best image to use for the cover?

When purchasing a Medallion with a personalized cover, you'll be asked to provide us with the image you would like to use. Examples of common images include photographs, and military or religious symbols. Uploaded images will be converted to a grayscale jpg file, and made to fit onto the medallion cover. This means images will be cropped and resized to be a circle no larger than 34.5mm in height and width. For images meant to fill the entire face of the medallion, higher resolutions are preferable for best results. Images that do not meet the minimum size and must be stretched to fill the face of the medallion may lose picture quality as a result.

If you have an order with special instructions, or wish to order multiple Custom Case Medallions with different covers, please contact us for assistance.

How do I create the Memory Medallion® story?

After purchasing a Medallion, you'll receive a Memory Medallion® username and password. Begin by logging-in to your account. You will see your Medallion(s) listed and can simply click "Edit" to begin building the Medallion story. You can add text, web links, photographs, and videos. Help boxes with detailed directions are located on the web site to assist you.

You can log-in to your account as often as you desire to add to and edit this information. When you are satisfied, click the "Publish" button to make the story public, so that your Medallion will be updated with the story you've created.

This process is demonstrated in our Video Tutorials section under "Editing your Medallion Story."

What kind of content can I have in my Medallion story?

We offer unlimited story text, unlimited links to outside sites or family tree, 999 image locations and up to 5 video locations (hosted on youtube, or a Vimeo Pro account). In addition, you can select which page will open when the medallion is visited: Story, Images or Video.

Can my family and friends help me to build the Medallion story?

Yes. As the owner of the Medallion, you have access to it through your Memory Medallion® account and can control its content. You can ask family and friends to supply you with the information so that you can add it yourself or you can grant them access to the actual Memory Medallion® editor to add information on their own. The "Share Editing" feature allows this, and can be seen in your account beside each of your Medallions. This function will allow you to give editing privileges to family or friends whom you wish to assist you in creating the story.

To share editing control to someone, simply click the link in the "Share" column beside the Medallion you wish to share editing control of, and then provide their e-mail address. An email will be sent from Memory Medallion® inviting the person to create or log into their own account. The Medallion you've shared editing control of will then be accessible from both accounts for editing. This will provide that person access only to the specific Medallion you've given them control of, they will not be able to access any other Medallions in your account without further permission.

This process is demonstrated in our Video Tutorials section under "Sharing Control of your Medallion Story."

What does it mean when the medallion I want to edit is "checked-out"?

If you have used the "Share Editing" function to allow others to assist you in the creation of the Memory Medallion content then you may see this "Checked-out" status message when you try to edit. It means that one of the people you "shared editing" with is working on the content right now or has left the editor open. A Memory Medallion is instantly "checked-out" for editing as soon as you click "Edit." To "check-in" the Memory Medallion so that others you have "shared editing" with can edit the content you must click either "Save & Publish" or "Cancel Changes." If you simply leave the "Editor" screen to go to another page in your browser or if you only click "Save & Quit" or "Save & Preview" you will still have the Memory Medallion "checked-out." This feature is to protect your changes as you edit content.

Can I send a link of my Medallion story to family or friends?

Yes, simply log-in to your account and click the "View" button beside the Medallion you would like to see. This will open the actual view of your Medallion in a new web browser page. Simply copy the unique web address from the address bar at the top of your browser and paste it into an email, text message, etc. and send. The recipient can click the link and view the Memory Medallion® as it will appear when read in-person.

You can also post a completed Medallion story on websites such as Twitter and Facebook, or easily send the story by E-mail through your user control panel. This process is demonstrated in our Video Tutorials section under "Publishing your Medallion Story."

How can I add a Youtube video to my Memory Medallion?  (Click here for a video tutorial.)

Once the video is uploaded to Youtube, ensure it is marked as either 'Public' or 'Unlisted' (Not as 'Private').
In your medallion editing area, you can find the add video button. Click it and provide the URL to the video, followed by a title and description.

What are Companion pieces?

Companion pieces are duplicates of a medallion you've already purchased, going to the same story profile rather than a unique one. These duplicates are offered at 50% off. They are available in any style that is equal to or under the cost of your full-priced product.

Companion Medallions are ideal for customers who want multiple copies or versions of the same medallion story. For example, a Thick Memory Medallion for installing on a tombstone, and an additional Small Memory Medallion for a photo frame at home.

How do I order Companion pieces?

Companion pieces are available at 50% OFF their matching product's retail price. Companion pieces must be added with the Primary Medallion when the Primary piece is added to the shopping cart. You cannot add Companion pieces to a Primary item already in the cart, nor can you add Companion pieces by themselves. The total price of the Companion piece(s) will be added to the total price for the cart item.

If you would like to order a companion piece for a Medallion you've ordered previously, please contact us for assistance.

How is the Memory Medallion® installed?

The Memory Medallion® can be installed on any flat, smooth surface. Once you have selected the location, clean it free of any dirt or other obstructions. Next, simply remove the red paper protecting the adhesive on the back of the Medallion. Once the protective paper is removed, press the Medallion firmly against the surface. Now the Medallion is ready for use.

If you prefer a flush-mount as opposed to the surface-mount described above, your local monument dealer or cemetery office can cut a small hole into the marker in a method similar to how dates are cut into pre-existing monuments. These Medallions have a diameter of 1.375” which is a standard drill bit size for easy installation. The depth of the cut should be 0.375”. Once the circle has been cut, follow the installation directions explained above. The only exception to this is the Small Memory Medallion, which has a diameter of 1".

Does the Medallion story need to be complete before I install it?

No, the Medallion can be installed right away because the story can be added at anytime by logging-in to your account and publishing. Every time you click "Publish" on a Medallion story that Medallion will be automatically updated with your latest version.

What kind of phones can read the Memory Medallion® QR code?

Since the Memory Medallion® is read through the camera of a phone, this is all that's required. The phone camera must be equipped with a type of lens known as a macro-lens. Many cell phones come with this feature, and nearly all new cell phones have this as standard. One way to tell if your phone has such a lens is to attempt to take a close-up photo of something from a distance of about ten inches. If your phone’s camera can take a clear, in-focus picture of an object from this short distance, then it likely has the macro-lens feature needed for reading Memory Medallions®.

To be able to read the Medallion information right at the Medallion’s location your cell phone will need to be able to connect to the internet in some form. This can be via regular cell phone transmission signal or it can be via Wi-Fi.

The specialized coding of the Memory Medallion® QR is activated using most any Bar Code scanning application software that is compatible with your phone and most all G3 type phones tend to have this software already installed within their basic features or readily downloadable for free from the phone manufacturer’s website. A variety of Code scanners, such as the ZXing Bar Code scanner, are available for download in locations such as the android and itunes app marketplaces. If you are unable to find a functioning scanner in the app markets, visit your phone manufacturer’s website and download their recommended version of a 2D (two dimensional) Bar Code Reader Application as the Medallion will work using most all standard versions.

What can I do if I am having difficulty reading a Memory Medallion® QR Code?
  • The amount and direction of light in the reading environment can greatly influence results. Ambient light often produces more favorable results than overhead indoor lighting. If large sections of the QR code are too dark or have a bright glare, it will not be easily readable. 85% of the barcode must be read for the information to be delivered. Please ensure that dark shadows aren't covering up the outside edges of the barcode.

  • The barcode's details need to be clearly visible. Avoid zooming in too closely, or reading from too far away. Holding the phone very close to the medallion is not necessarily the best way to get the code to read. A distance of 4 to 6 inches is ideal for many phones, but will vary between devices.

  • There are many barcode reading applications freely available on the iPhone and Android markets with various features; find the one that works well for your device. We recommend the ZXing Barcode Scanner, or the i-nigma Reader.

  • If all else fails, an effective solution is to use a digital camera (or smartphone with a powerful camera) to take a high-resolution picture of the QR Code. It is then possible to scan the code off of the image taken rather than the medallion.

Can I read a Medallion story without a smartphone?

Yes, smartphones are not required to read our stories, they only make reading them more convenient.
Listed below are a few alternatives for connecting to a Memory Medallion® story :

  • Take note of names on markers with medallions. At a computer, search our database via the searchbox at the top of our website.
  • Use a digital camera to take a clear picture of the medallon's barcode. Once at a computer, upload the image to a free online QR Code decoder, such as the ZXing Online Decoder, to translate the barcode into the story link.
  • Receive the website address for a story directly from the author(s). We offer e-mail, facebook and twitter publishing to make sending friends and family your stories an effortless process.
  • If you have a smartphone but no Internet, save the address in your barcode reader's history to view when your signal is restored.

What type of warranty is provided for Memory Medallion® products?

Memory Medallion® guarantees complete satisfaction to its customers with a 100% refund if they desire to return any product.

What assurance is there that the Memory Medallion® will be accessible in perpetuity?

We have a business model that escrows a portion of each purchase to support the perpetuity costs. In addition, our business model is further reinforced to fund the perpetuity of our database via a Services tab that facilitates a long-term revenue stream somewhat akin to advertising. Our extremely affordable cost is also an effort to attract consistent and sufficient long-term sales to support the perpetuity model. Best efforts have been implemented to make this model successful, but no absolute guarantees are possible.
