How do I create the Memory Medallion® story?

Begin by logging-in to your Memory Medallion® account. You will see your Medallion(s) listed and can simply click "Edit" to begin building the Medallion story. You can add text, web links, photographs, and videos. Help boxes with detailed directions are located on the web site to assist you. You can log-in to your account as often as you desire to add to and edit this information. You can "Save" your changes as you progress and "Preview" your story as it will look when the Medallion is read. When you are satisfied with your preview, you can click the "Publish" button to make the story public, so that your Medallion will be actively connected to the story you have created. You can log back in even after publishing to edit and re-publish at any time. This process is demonstrated in our Video Tutorials section under "Editing your Medallion Story."

Can my family and friends help me to build the Medallion story?

Yes. This can happen two ways. As the owner of the Medallion you have access to it through your Memory Medallion® account and can control its content. You can ask family and friends to supply you with the information so that you can add it yourself or you can choose to grant them access to the actual Memory Medallion® editor to input the information directly. If you choose to do the latter, you will use the Memory Medallion® "Share" feature. The "Share" feature can be seen in your account beside each of your Medallions. This function will allow you to give editing privileges to family or friends whom you wish to assist you in creating the story. Simply click the link in the "Share" column beside the Medallion you wish to share and then type their email address into the form. An automatic email will then be sent out from Memory Medallion® inviting the person to create or log into their own account. The Medallion you "Shared" will then be accessible from both of your accounts for editing. This will provide that person access only to the specific Medallion you "Shared," they will not be able to access any other Medallions in your account unless those are each "Shared" as well. This process is demonstrated in our Video Tutorials section under "Sharing Control of your Medallion Story."

Can I send a link to the Medallion story to family or friends?

Yes, simply log-in to your account and click the "View" button beside the Medallion you would like to see. This will open the actual view of your Medallion in a new web browser page. Simply copy the unique web address from the address bar at the top of your browser and paste it into an email, text message, etc. and send. The recipient can click the link and view the Memory Medallion® as it will appear when read in-person. You can also post a completed Medallion story on websites such as Twitter and Facebook, or easily send the story by E-mail through your user control panel. This process is demonstrated in our Video Tutorials section under "Publishing your Medallion Story."

Can I pass on my account information so that the Medallion(s) can continue to be edited by a later generation?

Yes, you can pass your account access on to any person(s) of your choosing and they could continue to log-in, edit, and publish changes. You can also use our "Share" function to give editing power to any person(s) you choose for a particular Memory Medallion. This will put specific Memory Medallion(s) into that person's account and allow them to continue editing using their own username and password. This process is demonstrated in our Video Tutorials section under "Sharing Control of your Medallion Story."

What are Primary and Companion pieces?

You can order our Products INDIVIDUALLY, in COMBINATIONS or in MULTIPLEs. If you are ordering COMBINATIONS or MULTIPLES it is important to understand our distinction between a PRIMARY piece and its COMPANION.

Our primary, or full-price, medallions are each attached to their own unique story, their own QR code and their own serial number. In addition, we offer dupicate medallions at a discount, which we call companions. These are for customers who want multiple copies or versions of the same exact medallion story. For example, a large open-face medallion for installing on a tombstone, and an additional small open-face medallion for a photo frame at home.

These companion medallions have the same QR code as their attached full-priced medallion, and will share its serial number as well. The Medallion's story is built under that serial number, and all of the companion medallions will connect to it.

Multiple PRIMARY pieces can be purchased simultaneously, and often at a discount, in the event that you are interested in obtaining multiple story profiles rather than duplicates of a single story.

How do I order Companion pieces?

Companion pieces are available at 50% OFF their matching product's retail price. Companion pieces must be added with the Primary Medallion or Locket when the Primary piece is added to the shopping cart. You cannot add Companion pieces to a Primary item already in the cart, nor can you add Companion pieces by themselves. The total price of the Companion piece(s) will be added to the total price for the cart item.

Every order must contain at least ONE Primary piece. The Primary piece can be any Medallion type or a Locket, but if your COMBINATION order contains the purchase of a Medallion, the Medallion will be designated as the PRIMARY piece for purposes of calculating the total cost of the overall order. An example of a COMBINATION Order: 1 Std. Medallion (PRIMARY PIECE) + 2 Lockets (COMPANION PIECES) all will be connected to the SAME story profile.

What kind of cell phones can read the Memory Medallion® QR code?

Since the Memory Medallion® QR is activated for reading through the camera of a cell phone the camera on the phone must be one that can take close-up pictures. The camera must be equipped with a type of lens known as a macro-lens. Many cell phones come with this feature and nearly all new cell phones have this as standard. One way to tell if your phone has such a lens is to attempt to take a close-up photo of something from a distance of about ten inches. If your phone’s camera can take a clear, in-focus picture of an object from this short distance then it likely has the correct macro-lens feature needed for reading Memory Medallions®. Next, to be able to read the Medallion information right at the Medallion’s location your cell phone will need to be able to connect to the internet in some form. This can be via regular cell phone transmission signal or it can be via Wi-Fi.

The specialized coding of the Memory Medallion® QR is activated using most any Bar Code scanning application software that is compatible with your phone and most all G3 type phones tend to have this software already installed within their basic features or readily downloadable for free from the phone manufacturer’s website. A variety of Code scanners, such as the ZXing Bar Code scanner, are available for download in locations such as the android and itunes app marketplaces. If you are unable to find a functioning scanner in the app markets, visit your phone manufacturer’s website and download their recommended version of a 2D (two dimensional) Bar Code Reader Application as the Medallion will work using most all standard versions.

What can I do if I am having difficulty reading a Memory Medallion® QR Code?

  • The amount and direction of light in the reading environment can have an influence on results. Ambient light often produces more favorable results than overhead indoor lighting. If large sections of the QR code are too dark or have a bright glare, it will not be easily readable. 85% of our QR code must be read for the information to be delivered.

  • The QR code's details need to be clearly visible. Avoid zooming in too closely, or reading from too far away. Holding the phone very close to the medallion is not necessarily the best way to get the code to read. A distance of 4 to 6 inches is ideal for many phones, but will vary between devices.

  • There are many scanning applications freely available on the iPhone and Android markets with various features; find the one that works well for your device. We recommend the ZXing Barcode Scanner, or the i-nigma Reader.

  • There are 3 large boxes forming 3 of the corners, and a small box near the remaining corner of every QR code; use these boxes as a guide. If you are using the ZXing Barcode Scanner, it is designed to show green dots on the screen when it is detecting these corners. These dots will help you judge if you are in good light and at a good distance. If you see all 4 green dots at once, you should be getting the information shortly after.

  • If all else fails, an effective solution is to use a digital camera (or smartphone with a powerful camera) to take a high-resolution picture of the QR Code. It is then possible to scan the code off of the image taken rather than the medallion.

Can I read a Medallion without an Internet connection or Cell phone signal?

If your phone cannot connect to the internet to view the Medallion content, then you will need to take a close-up picture of the Medallion QR’s code at its location. This picture can be used to activate the Medallion information from a location which is connected to the Internet. Many free online services, such as the ZXing Online Decoder, are available for users to decode images of QR codes into readable information such as our Memory Medallion® URLs. Alternatively, you can save the scanned URL with your phone's bar code reader if it has a scanned history function. This will enable future viewing of the Medallion after the phone's signal is restored.

What should I be aware of when choosing an image for a Custom Case Medallion?

We are able to burn images onto the case of the medallion for an additional fee. Medallions which have this feature are called Custom Case Medallions. Examples of common custom case images include photographs, symbols or artistic designs. Uploaded images will be converted to grayscale and made to fit onto the medallion cover. This means images will be cropped and resized to be a circle no larger than 34.5mm in height and width. For images meant to fill the entire face of the medallion, higher resolutions are preferable for best results. Images that do not meet the minimum size and must be stretched to fill the face of the medallion may lose picture quality as a result.

Can video be added to a Medallion profile?

The Memory Medallion® allows for the addition of videos which are already uploaded onto Youtube or Vimeo. You can input a link from YouTube or Vimeo and thereby create embedded, flowing video right on the Medallion. You can also choose to make the video your "default" so that it plays first when the Medallion is read. The video option can be selected when you begin to build the Memory Medallion® story or can be added at any later date. This process is demonstrated in our Video Tutorials section under "Editing your Medallion Story."

How is the Memory Medallion® installed?

The Memory Medallion® can be installed outside or in, on any flat, smooth surface. Once you have selected the location, clean it free of any dirt or other obstructions. Installation is made simple by removing the red plastic paper protecting the adhesive on the back of the Medallion case. Once the protective paper is removed just press the Medallion firmly against the surface. Now the Medallion is ready for use.

If you have a Standard Case or Custom Case Memory Medallion® and would prefer a flush-mount, as opposed to the surface-mount described above, you can contact your local monument dealer or cemetery office to have a small hole cut into the marker much the same as dates are cut into pre-existing monuments. These Medallions have a diameter of 1.375” which is a standard drill bit size for easy installation. The depth of the cut should be 0.375”. Once the circle has been cut, follow the installation directions explained above.

After I purchase a Memory Medallion®, is there an additional charge to keep the information accessible into the future?

No, there is no additional charge. You pay once for your Memory Medallion and that is all. The only additional charge(s) you would ever have is if you choose to add optional upgrades later on for additional features. Even those features are one-time fee only add-ons.

What assurance is there that the Memory Medallion will be accessible in perpetuity?

We have a business model that escrows a portion of each purchase to support the perpetuity costs. In addition, our business model is further reinforced to fund the perpetuity of our database via a Services tab that facilitates a long-term revenue stream somewhat akin to advertising. Our extremely affordable cost is also an effort to attract consistent and sufficient long-term sales to support the perpetuity model. Best efforts have been implemented to make this model successful, but no absolute guarantees are possible.
