Henry Stewart Kemp Birth: Aug. 12, 1812 Death: Apr. 20, 1883 Henry S. Kemp was born in Bourbon County, Kentuck. In a biography, Henry states that his father, Charles and several uncles served in the War of 1812 and that he was a Lieutenant of Militia during the Black Hawk War of 1831-1832. Henry recalls that he came to Adams County in the spring of 1831. A family history says that he traveled down the Ohio River with a small cavalcade of neighbors and relatives including his mother, Martha Hamilton Kemp and his maternal grand-mother, Rebecca Davis Hamilton. They left in October then made their way up the Mississippi River until forced to halt by ice. They spent the winter near Ste. Genevieve, Missouri and reached Adams County on the 14th day of February.He at first kept a store in Quincy for a few years and then worked at plastering and bricklaying. About 1840, he decided to try farming and moved to Ellington Township, just north of Quincy. Henry is known to have held several county offices and served as constable from 1843 to 1845. He owned some 1000 acres and described himself as an old line Whig up to the formation of the Republican Party in 1854 when he joined that party. One history states that he built a large frame house, which served as a station on the Underground Railroad. Henry was married November 5, 1846 to Caroline Virginia Laughlin, who was born in Clark Couty, Kentuck on March 4, 1813. . Children of Henry S. and Caroline Virginia- Charles William- Born November 7, 1847. Henry Tarleton married Margaret Williams. Lucy Hamilton- Born June 4, 1853. Married to Napoleon Morehead Feb. 20, 1872 and had one son, Roy A. Morehead, before divorcing. She then married Walter L. Chandler, Nov. 9, 1881 and had a daughter Ethel and a son, Walter. She died May 11, 1890 at Sioux City, IA and is buried in the Kemp Cemetery on the farm. Archibald Simon- Born January 12, 1851 and died April 6, 1888. He is also buried in the Kemp Cemetery. Henry died April 28, 1883. Caroline on April 17, 1892. Their grave markers are in the family cemetery on what was once their farm.
